The heart and soul of LVNRV is the dedicated cadre of volunteers who give their time, energy, and expertise to help adults and families throughout the region to develop the skills they need for independence. Join us!

We have several different volunteer opportunities available (see descriptions below):

Becoming an LVNRV Volunteer

1. All interested volunteers must first attend a 1-hour Volunteer Information Session:

  • October 11, 2023 at 12:00 PM (ZOOM ONLY) - Register

  • Can’t attend any of these information sessions but are interested in learning more? Sign up for our newsletter to keep up with Literacy NRV happenings or email us

3. Following the Volunteer Information Session, you will be emailed a volunteer application and will sign a volunteer agreement.

4. Once your application is submitted, you will be emailed a more in-depth online training module to work through at your own pace (additional training is provided and varies depending on the volunteer opportunity that you’re interested in).

5. When you’ve completed your online training, you’ll book an appointment with our Tutor Coordinator to go over your skills, preferences, and readiness for tutoring.

6. You’ll then be matched with your volunteer opportunity and will be on the road to changing lives across the New River Valley!

One-to-One Tutoring

Are you interested in helping another adult to improve their skills in reading, writing, basic math, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages,) or basic computer skills, or to prepare for exams such as the GED or U.S. Citizenship Exam?

Volunteer tutors with LVNRV provide one-to-one or small group tutoring in public locations throughout the NRV. Click here to read more about the tutoring experience.

Eligible volunteer tutors:

  • Can meet with a student for 1-3 hours/week

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Have at least a high school diploma and read at a 12th grade level or higher

  • Have the ability to communicate clearly

  • Are patient, flexible, non-judgmental, and supportive

  • Have sensitivity to other backgrounds and cultures

  • Can commit to one year of tutoring

NOTE: Tutoring is taking place virtually or in-person, depending on the desire of tutor and student.

The pathway to becoming a volunteer tutor:

1. Follow the steps above (complete a Volunteer Application, attend a Volunteer Information Session, sign a Volunteer Agreement form).

2. Complete approximately 3 hours of an online tutor training module.

4. Schedule a “Getting Started” meeting with staff to discuss the training and possible matches/volunteer placements. (Note that you may need to wait some time before you are matched with a student that fits your interests, availability and location preferences and can commit consistently to tutoring.)

The tutoring experience:

1. Meet weekly (in person in a public location or virtually) with a local adult to help him/her achieve literacy and language-related goals.

2. Register for and participate in “experienced” tutor meetings. Our staff are available to support you through one-on-one consultations as well.

3. Complete quarterly reports documenting your volunteer hours as well as student instructional activities and progress toward the goals on the student's goals checklist. (Quarter 1: October 15th, Quarter 2: January 15th, Quarter 3: April 15th, Quarter 4: July 15th)

4. Complete an end-of-program report should you or the student exit the program.

5. Change a life through literacy!

Eligible volunteer classroom assistants:

  • Can commit to volunteering at an LVNRV 2-hour class once a week for a period of 7-10 weeks (varies by class type)

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Have at least a high school diploma and read at a 12th grade level or higher

  • Have the ability to communicate clearly

  • Are patient, flexible, non-judgmental, and supportive

  • Have sensitivity to other backgrounds and cultures
