Meet Catherine.
Catherine stopped attending high school at age 16, after she gave birth to a baby girl. She wanted to be a role model and to be able to support her daughter, so she worked with a literacy tutor to improve her skills to pass the GED. Now Catherine has a good job in health care! We are so inspired by her dedication to her goals and to her family, and we are so grateful to her -- and to all our amazing health care workers -- for helping our community.
Your GiveLocalNRV gift will open the door to a brighter and healthier future for individuals, families and our community!
Exciting news!
Two generous donors have pledged a total of $5,000 if we can raise $5,000 on GiveLocalNRV, an initiative of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley! Donations can be made today through June 24 at 11:59 pm to help us reach our goal -- double your donation and double your impact!
Now, more than ever, our community needs us!
It’s anticipated that COVID-19’s upending of the economy will create a major increase in need for basic education services from NRV adults who need literacy, language and digital skills now more than ever to understand critical health information, to access community resources when they need help, to obtain basic skills or a GED to secure employment, to combat social isolation, to perform online-job search, to help their children with homework, and to participate in this new virtual world.
Despite the pandemic, literacy instruction continues thanks to our dedicated, creative tutors who have developed distance education strategies -- using video-conference, phone, email, online programs, U.S. Mail, and even front-porch book deliveries!
